SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE THE INTERN
WILL GAIN AS A RESULT OF THE INTERNSHIP: This internship will be located
within the Food Safety and Inspection Service. Dependent on the student’s
background and the needs of the Agency, interns may gain experience in budget,
Human Resources, compliance and providing support to investigations. 1) Interns
may assist in recall investigations, recall effectiveness checks, and answering
consumer inquiries. The selected student may also assist with performing
reviews, analyses, and verification of HACCP, SSOP and prerequisite programs
for food safety assessments. 2) Interns may assist program managers in the
evaluation of violations of the Federal Meat Inspection Act (FMIA), Poultry
Products Inspection Act (PPIA), Egg Products Inspection Act (EPIA), HACCP,
sanitation, and humane handling requirements to assess legal and administrative
actions. 3) Interns may work with seasoned Resource Management Analysts on a
variety of human resources initiatives including, but not limited to: on
boarding new employees, exiting employees, staffing, resource allocations,
labor/employee relations, student programs, and workforce planning. 4) Interns
may assist with accounting and/or financial management of programs, resolve
accounting and financial related issues, develop and maintain spreadsheets and
databases, and provide good customer service.

Latino Politics Short Course hosted by American Political Science Association
The Latino Caucus of the American Political Science Association invites students, staff, and faculty to participate in a Latino Politics Short Course. This one-day workshop will be held on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 from 1:00-6:00pm at the Hilton Chicago (720 South Michigan Ave., 3rd Floor). The cost is $5 for students. This course is a great opportunity to learn more about the study of Latino politics in the U.S. and to network with faculty and graduate students studying racial/ethnic politics.
This year, topics include:
- Analysis of the immigration reform battle taking place in Congress and
its impact on the 2014 elections;
- A panel on Latinos and the media
- A roundtable on publishing in political science journal with four editors from some of the leading political science journals (including APSR, Polity, Perspectives on Politics, and Politics, Groups, and Identities);

ThinkChicago: Lollapalooza
From August 1st-4th, Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Chicago Ideas Week, World
Business Chicago, ChicagoNEXT, Built In Chicago, Chicagoland
Entrepreneurial Center (CEC), University of Illinois, and Lollapalooza
will invite 100 university students from across the country as well as
alumni of the ThinkChicago program to take a tour of the Chicago’s
fast growing tech scene and also attend the 3-day Lollapalooza music
festival. Each admitted student will receive a ticket to Lollapalooza
as well as the opportunity to attend company career fairs, meet with
Chicago-based businesses, and participate in panels featuring Mayor
Emanuel, business leaders, and Chicago-based technologists.
Types of Students we’re looking for:
ThinkChicago: Lollapalooza is seeking candidates who are
enthusiastic about digital technology, computer science, innovation, or
entrepreneurship and have demonstrated a commitment to excellence as
evidenced by academic honors, leadership ability, extracurricular
activities, and/or professional achievement. It is preferred that
THINKCHICAGO applicants be in their junior or senior years of their
undergraduate studies. In addition, alumni of ThinkChicago who attended
ThinkChicago in 2011 or 2012 are encouraged to apply and a separate
application will be distributed to them individually.
