At the University of Chicago Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, we want students to have access to academic and cultural resources, but to also have opportunities independent of the classroom and student life. Thus, the following is a list of opportunities where students can go to search for funding, enrich their summers or find work after graduation.

Call For Paper : The Social Determinants of Mental Health: From Awareness to Action

Paper Submission Deadline : December 31, 2009

This conference will be the first in the United States to convene thinkers from diverse disciplinary and professional backgrounds to address the Social Determinants of Mental Health (SDOMH).

There is a growing understanding that the social conditions in which "… we are born, grow, live, work and age…" (WHO 2007) profoundly impact health and well-being. Increasingly, that knowledge is used to inform the prevention and treatment of such physical illnesses as cardiovascular and respiratory disease, cancer, obesity, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS. However, the social determinants framework has not been as explicitly used to shape mental health debate, policy and programming.

The purpose of this conference is to increase awareness about how social conditions impact mental health; develop mental health prevention and intervention strategies that are informed by the social determinants framework; create multidisciplinary collaborations to address the multifaceted social conditions that impact mental health; and develop new knowledge and practice innovations.
