CSRPC Graduate Lectureships in Race & Ethnic Studies

The College and the Center for the Study of Race, Politics and Culture is calling for applications by advanced graduate students to teach one undergraduate course of their own design on topics related to race and ethnic studies. Courses in any related topic or thematic may be proposed. The Center is especially interested in courses that posit race and processes of racialization in comparative and transnational frameworks; highlight the intersection of race and ethnicity with other identities (gender, class, sexuality and nationality); and/or interrogate social and identity cleavages within racialized communities.

Eligibility: Advanced graduate students (Ph.D. candidates with at least one chapter of the dissertation written) in any discipline at the University of Chicago are encouraged to apply. Graduate lecturers will receive $5,000 for the individual undergraduate course they will teach in the College. This fellowship is for one quarter only. Six Graduate Lectureships will be awarded.

General Summary:
Given the strong interest in higher education administration among graduate students, Career Advancement has created the Higher Education Fellows Program. This program is intended for graduate students seeking experience in university administration specifically, and program management more broadly. More information is available online at: https://careeradvancement.uchicago.edu/career-resource-center/graduate-student.  Graduate Student Affairs is now offering a position through the Higher Education Fellows Program for 2013. The GSA Higher Education Fellow will create and launch initiatives that support financial literacy awareness and education for graduate students. The fellow will be responsible for creating sustainable programs that encourage students to engage in issues of personal finance by utilizing University of Chicago resources, external tools, and peer support.
 
Responsibilities:
§  Identify and assess existing financial resources on campus, such as student services offices, external financial institutions, student-run organizations and university programming.
§  Based on assessment of existing resources, facilitate collaborations with individuals or partnering units on campus.
§  Create an online clearinghouse of pertinent tools and resources for managing personal finances and debt, featuring referrals to online budgeting systems, community events, and tips for economical urban living.
§  Plan a year-long program/workshop agenda that focuses on all components of personal finance, including but not limited to: student loan management, budgeting, investments, long-term planning, and online resources.
§  Create round-table discussions and/or social opportunities for peer-to-peer interaction on the topic of personal finances tailored to target audiences of doctoral and master’s/professional school students.
§  Identify communication networks and media (including social or other electronic media) that will be used and/or developed to engage graduate students in a sustained way.
§  Advise students in one-on-one or small group sessions to provide tips on budgeting and financial planning.
§  Required participation in Career Advancement’s Leadership in Higher Education workshop series.
 
Qualifications:
§  UChicago graduate student enrolled in a full-time doctoral or master’s program in the graduate divisions or professional schools.
§  Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
§  Experience in program management preferred.
§  Demonstrated experience and/or interest in economics, personal finance and/or management helpful.
§  Strong skills with all Microsoft Office applications required.
§  Strong skills with digital media and communication required.

Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Summer Internships

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is looking for talented individuals for 2013 summer internship opportunities.  As a summer student employee, you will have the opportunity to work with some of the most experienced transportation professionals in the nation which will help give you in-depth knowledge of the issues and challenges of transportation projects in the fifth most populated state in the U.S.  The engineering summer program is designed to give engineering students an opportunity to obtain on the job training, knowledge and experience with the premier state department of transportation.

The Illinois Department of Transportation has posted the Summer Technical Program information on the department’s website at http://www.dot.il.gov/techapp/vacancy.html.  Select the IDOT district or office where you are interested in applying and carefully follow the directions on the information sheet provided.  Applications will be accepted from April 9 through Monday, April 22 at 4:30PM.  

Engineering Program: This program is designed to give engineering students an opportunity to obtain on the job training. Only students who have completed a minimum of one year (30 semester hrs, 45 qtr. Hrs credit) of college courses in engineering through completion of four or more years in engineering or related curriculum are eligible.

Non-Engineering (Technician Trainee) Program: This program is designed to give non-engineering students an opportunity to obtain on the job training. ORCSA Student Peer Advisor (Spring 2013)


Summary: Reporting to the Campus Activities Advisor - Support the vision and mission of the Office of the Reynolds Club and Student Activities (ORCSA). Provide an additional service to RSO’s by advising groups in event planning, marketing, financial management, etc. Responsible for holding workshops for RSOs throughout the quarter. Assist the Campus Activities Coordinator in developing, marketing, executing and evaluating the new peer advisors service.   

The position pays $10/ hour with a 3rd week start date.  

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
*       Marketing of peer advisors service: designing fliers, digital marketing, posting of marketing materials and managing the Twitter and FB accounts.
*       Planning, coordinating, and implementing workshops during 6th and 7th week.

*       Attend Weekly meetings with other peer advisors and Campus Activities Coordinator.
*       Hold weekly hours in the activities center for walk in appointments (~10 hours)

*       Administrative duties as assigned.

         
Required Qualifications:  Strong knowledge and experience in running or being an active member of an RSO. Must be an undergraduate or graduate student. An interest in student affairs and student life preferred. The ability to work independently and carry out assignments and projects without detailed instructions required; excellent verbal and written communication skills and computer skills required; proficiency knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and the Internet required; knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe PageMaker, and other graphic design applications preferred; willingness and ability to work some evenings and weekends required. Graduate Instructorship in the Human Rights Program


The Human Rights Program is calling for applications by advanced graduate students to teach one undergraduate Human Rights course of their own design. The course should deal with human rights from a disciplinary, thematic, or regional perspective. The course can be taught in any of the three quarters of the 2013-14 academic year.

We invite applications from all interested Ph.D. students in the Humanities and Social Sciences Divisions. Successful applicants in the past have come from the Departments of Philosophy, History, Anthropology, Political Science, Sociology, and the Divinity School. A committee of faculty from the Human Rights Program Faculty Board will select the winners. Graduate lecturers will receive $5,000 for the individual undergraduate course they will teach in the College. This fellowship is for one quarter only. Only University of Chicago advanced doctoral students are eligible to apply. Three Human Rights Graduate Lectureships will be awarded.

Teaching Assistantship for Introduction to Latin American Civilizations


Each academic year the Center for Latin American Studies appoints advanced graduate student Teaching Assistants for the Introduction to Latin American Civilizations course sequence through an internal competition.

With funding from the Collegiate Social Sciences Division, the Center for Latin American Studies typically offers Teaching Assistantships for the three-quarter sequence Introduction to Latin American Civilization. Advanced graduate students who specialize in Latin America, regardless of academic discipline, are encouraged to apply.

Teaching Assistants complete all reading assignments, attend class lectures, lead Friday discussion sections, hold office hours for students, meet regularly to discuss course material and teaching strategies, and design and grade class assignments and exams. Please note: Each quarter, one of the Friday discussion sections is conducted in Spanish and one is conducted in Portuguese as part of the college’s Languages Across Chicago initiative. Spanish-proficient and Portuguese-proficient candidates are encouraged to apply to lead these sections!

Teaching Assistants receive a salary of $3,000 from the College for this position.

Typically, the autumn quarter of Latin American Civilization examines the major pre-Columbian civilizations, the Iberian conquest and the foundations of colonial society. The winter quarter explores late colonial history, with particular emphasis on recentralization efforts and the independence movements, as well as the difficulties associated with political and economic development. The spring quarter examines themes central to understanding modern Latin America, including revolutionary movements, U.S.-Latin American relations, and economic and cultural transformations.

Graduate Student Preceptor Position for BA Colloquium in Latin American Studies


The Center for Latin American Studies seeks an advanced graduate student Preceptor to lead the BA Colloquium in Latin American Studies, a required course for Latin American Studies majors. The Colloquium meets 15 times throughout the academic year (1½-hour sessions every other week) to bring together the diverse cohort of senior undergraduate majors to enhance academic, peer, and career-development support. The Preceptor teaches the Colloquium in close collaboration with the Latin American Studies Faculty Advisor and meets with each student for a minimum of 3 office hours/quarter to provide individual support in the process of writing the BA paper. This position requires a full academic year commitment.

Primary Responsibilities include:
  • Provide preliminary guidance in identifying workable BA Paper topics 
  • Coach students in the strategies of approaching a major research project 
  • Guide students as they acquire the techniques of effective research writing 
The successful candidate will be an advanced graduate student in the Social Sciences or Humanities with the ability to advise undergraduate students with diverse disciplinary interests, including History, Anthropology, Economics, Biological Sciences, Public Policy, and the Humanities. Advanced graduate students in the Divinity School with a historical concentration are also encouraged to apply. The Graduate Preceptor will receive a salary of $7,500 from the College for Academic Year 2013-14.  This position is contingent on funding at the expected levels.

The Office of the Provost is now offering a position through the Higher Education Fellows Program for 2012-13.  That office is seeking a graduate student to assist with graduate diversity recruitment. Assignments may include but are not limited to survey development and analysis, organizing campus visits, leading social media initiatives and outreach to prospective students, clerical duties and the tracking of pipeline programs, assisting with the development of research projects, minority recruitment yield events, and pipeline program activities. Institute of International Education Scholarship Division Graduate Internship Program


The Institute of International Education’s (IIE) Office for Latin America works with various foundations, private corporations, institutions, and governments in managing scholarship and training programs to provide Latin Americans with more opportunities for higher education and exchange. Currently, IIE works closely with Cargill, ExxonMobil, Rolex, and the Rockefeller Foundation, as well as with NYU Abu Dhabi on the promotion, selection and monitoring of scholarships across Latin America.

This is a paid internship position. 
 
The Scholarship Interns work with one or more IIE/Latin America scholarship programs to assist in:
  • Responding to inquiries about IIE/Latin America scholarship program opportunities. 
  • Managing contact databases and statistical information about grantee cohorts. 
  • Assistance in promotional activities. 
  • Communication with university representatives and students. 
  • Assistance in selection processes. 
  • Conducting research. 
  • Creating promotional and statistical analysis presentations. 
  • Organizing orientation programs for grantees. 
  • Program development initiatives including research and proposal writing. 
  • Completing office tasks and working on other programs as needed.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate program (or recently graduated with a Master’s degree) at higher education institution in the United States. NOTE: It is not required that interns be U.S. citizens, as long as they have studied in a U.S. college or university.
  • Ability to communicate competently in both Spanish and English, intercultural competence. Strong writing skills in English, preferably Spanish as well. 
  • Personal maturity as demonstrated by the ability to receive instruction and work on projects with limited supervision in a fast paced environment. 
  • Self-direction is essential, as is the ability to work with a small team. Must also feel comfortable working in a shared office space. 
  • Problem solving, leadership skills, and flexibility in responding to changing priorities. 
  • Intermediate skills in software applications: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Previous participation in a study-abroad program or other international experience.  
  • The ability to adapt to and benefit from a new cultural experience. 
  • Professional experience in a public service office, preferably working with high school or college students. 
  • Demonstrated interest in international education and Latin America. 
  • General knowledge of Mexican history and culture. Interns are encouraged to keep abreast of current political, economic, educational, and social events in Mexico. 
  • Intermediate skills in Outlook and Access software applications, and social media.

Woodrow Wilson-Rockefeller Brothers Fund Fellowships for Aspiring Teachers of Color

Are you a planning a career in public school teaching?

Consider applying for the Woodrow Wilson-Rockefeller Brothers Fund Fellowships for Aspiring Teachers of Color. Funded through the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the Fellowship offers support for Fellows to complete master’s degree programs in education and become excellent educators who ensure student success in high-need schools. STUDENTS MAJORING IN STEM FIELDS, who are interested in teaching, and who  meet the eligibility criteria are strongly encouraged to consider this opportunity.

The Award:

The fellowship includes:
  • A $30,000 stipend to apply toward the cost of a master’s degree at a participating graduate program (see list on the website listed at the bottom of this email.
