The Center for Gender Studies Dissertation Writing Fellowship Competition

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS:
The Center for Gender Studies (CGS) is pleased to announce the dissertation-writing fellowship competition for the school term 2010-2011.

Eligibility: University of Chicago Ph.D. candidates from all disciplines are encouraged to apply. Any dissertation centrally on matters of gender/sexuality is eligible for this fellowship--special consideration will be given to projects that challenge disciplinary boundaries and that attend to racial and/or economic hierarchy. Residency at CGS during the main three academic quarters is essential. Some travel for research for brief periods is allowed, but must be discussed with the Director in advance.

Please note: Other UC funding may restrict eligibility. Because the intent behind this fellowship is to allow the awardee to devote her/his full attention and effort to completion of the dissertation, the terms of this award do not allow one to engage in any remunerative activity, including teaching, on or off campus, or to hold any other award during the period.

Award: The successful candidate will receive $15,000 for the academic year 2010-2011 dispersed according to University policy. The recipient of this fellowship will also be given an office at the Center for Gender Studies from September of 2010 - August of 2011. This recipient of the fellowship is expected to participate in and present at the Gender and Sexuality Studies Workshop. She or he is also obliged to attend Center programs, such as brownbag discussions, and to participate in them fully as an interlocutor.

Application Process: The application should include a completed Applicant Data Sheet (Word doc | PDF file) (also available at the Center for Gender Studies), a statement of purpose (cover letter describing your work in relation to your general intellectual preparation, commitments, etc.), a prospectus (description of the dissertation), one chapter, and two letters of recommendation.

The deadline for submission is Wednesday, March 31, 2010, 12:00 PM. Early applications are welcome.
