At the University of Chicago Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, we want students to have access to academic and cultural resources, but to also have opportunities independent of the classroom and student life. Thus, the following is a list of opportunities where students can go to search for funding, enrich their summers or find work after graduation.

Summer Clerkships for 1Ls! Application Deadline 2/14!

The Grand Rapids Bar Association (GRBA) and the Floyd Skinner Bar Association have an opportunity with their Minority Clerkship Program.

This program, a collaborative effort to increase the diversity of the West Michigan legal community, facilitates the placement of first-year minority law students in law firms, corporations, and public interest clerkships. We are currently seeking candidates for placement in the summer of 2012. The Application deadline is February 14.

Applicants must have taken legal writing prior to participation in the program, as much of the work will involve written assignments.  Students who are currently in their second year of law school or have completed more than 30 credits prior to the start of the clerkship are not eligible to participate.

The program application is available for download from the GRBA website, www.grbar.org, at the following address: www.grbar.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=68. Details of applicant qualifications and the application and interview processes are included on the application form.

Interested candidates must submit the completed application, a resume, a cover letter, and first semester transcripts, by Tuesday, February 14, 2012

Via Mail to:
Grand Rapids Bar Association
161 Ottawa Ave NW, Ste 203-B
Grand Rapids, MI 49503

Or via E-mail to: karen@grbar.org

Please note: In order to facilitate submission of applications by the above deadline,  we will accept electronic/unofficial copies of transcripts. However, an official copy must follow by mail.

Students who submit the application, along with their resume and transcript will be contacted regarding interviews by the Selection Committee. Interviews will be held at the Grand Rapids Campus of Thomas M. Cooley Law School on Saturday, March 3, 2012.  Alternative arrangements may be made for students unable to travel to Michigan on the above date.

Offers for summer clerkship positions will be extended beginning the last week of March.  Students will be expected to commit to participating in the Program 48 hours after an offer has been extended.

Should you have any questions, feel free to contact the GRBA at karen@grbar.org or the program chair, Salvatore Pirrotta, at pirrottas@millerjohnson.com.
