James C. Hormel Dissertation Fellowships in Lesbian and Gay Studies

The Lesbian and Gay Studies Project is pleased to announce the competition for the James C. Hormel Fellowship in Lesbian and Gay Studies for the 2010-11 academic year. The Hormel Fellowships are made possible by the generous support of James C. Hormel, the former Ambassador to Luxembourg and an alumnus and former Dean of the University of Chicago Law School.

Eligibility and Terms: The fellowship competition is open to University of Chicago Ph.D. students who are writing dissertations in lesbian, gay, and queer studies. Students in all disciplines are encouraged to apply. One or two fellowships will be awarded for the 2009-10 academic year. The fellowship provides a stipend of $14,000 plus tuition, insurance and fees for the 2010-11 academic year, and Hormel Fellows are also provided with office space from the LGSP at the Center for Gender Studies. Recipients are expected to devote the year to work on the dissertation and not to take on other jobs. They are also expected to participate in the programs of the LGSP and Center for Gender Studies, to attend the Gender and Sexuality Studies Workshop, and to present their work to it.


Applications are due at the Center for Gender Studies by Wednesday, March 31, 2010.

They must include two copies, in order, of the following:

1. summary sheet stating the applicant's name, address, phone, and e-mail; department; year entering department; proposed dissertation or thesis title; and name of faculty recommenders (and their departments), in that order;
2. a 2-page (single-spaced) summary of the research project, which explains its relationship to the field of lesbian, gay and queer studies if not self-evident;
3. a 1-page statement describing the applicant's interest, background, and previous involvement in lesbian, gay, and queer studies;
4. a curriculum vita; and
5. a year-by-year summary of the financial aid and grants (both internal and external, including dollar amounts) received by the applicant while in graduate school.

The application dossier should also include:

1. one official transcript;
2. letters from two faculty members addressing the applicant's work and its relevance to lesbian and gay studies (letters sent directly or delivered in sealed, signed envelopes with the application).
