Internship Announcement: E-advocacy and Webmaster Intern for Chinatown

The Coalition for a Better Chinese American Community (CBCAC) is a coalition of eight major service and advocacy organizations in Chicago’s Chinatown and Uptown communities. Our mission is to empower Chinese Americans in Greater Chicago through organizing, civic participation, education and coalition building. Intern will be stationed at Chinese American Service League in Chinatown and primarily work with the Chinese population there.

Position Summary:
The Coalition for a Better Chinese American Community (CBCAC) is looking for a “tech-visionary” to handle its various computer technology and e-based needs, including website design, network/server oversight and web communications. This is an opportunity for a self-starter to use his/her knowledge and creativity to help create a powerful web and electronic communications presence in the struggle for empowering the Chinatown community. S/he will work with both the Community Organizer and Coalition Chairman in development of CBCAC communications strategy. In addition, all CBCAC interns provide support in planning and preparing for CBCAC events.


Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Design CBCAC website
  • Maintain and update CBCAC website on a regular basis with headlines, news stories, action alerts, events, and other information;
  • Create and distribute the CBCAC e-newsletter, which requires working collaboratively with Organizers and Communications. The CBCAC “member newsletter” and “general newsletter” are sent through a g-mail account.
  • Maintain and distribute information on volunteers acquired through the CBCAC website.
  • Stay abreast of tech developments (as on techsoup.org) and work to expand CBCAC web presence and email listserv
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Skill in using most Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, Access, etc.)
  • Skill in using basic HTML and CSS a must; PHP/MySQL a plus
  • Knowledge of modern web communication and database management
  • Ability to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objectives without supervision
  • Ability to handle and resolve recurring problems.

Credentials and Experience:
  •  1 year of related experience
  • Personal experience/passion for immigrant justice issues
  • Special Requirements: Laptop computer a plus.
