Freshman Orientation Counselor

Project Description:

The University of Chicago Collegiate Scholars Program (UCCSP) is a three-year enrichment program specifically for Chicago public high school students. UCCSP provides talented students with various academic, cultural, social and community service opportunities designed to help students succeed at outstanding institutions of higher education. The Collegiate Scholars Program is looking for responsible and outgoing individuals to help orient and supervise academically achieving high-school scholars to the University of Chicago resources and community. Counselors are expected to encourage the scholars to socialize, learn, share, and enhance their experiences within the college setting.

Dates of Service:

June 23- June 26, 2011

Responsibilities:
  • Oversee 4-6 freshman high school students and direct them to scheduled events
  • Provide positive and patient mentoring support and supervision
  • Attend and participate in scheduled meetings prior to the start date
  • Provide support and assistance to other counselors and CSP staff
  • Develop positive relationships between students and staff
  • Ensure that the health and safety rules are maintained
  • Assist in creating and maintaining a friendly and academic atmosphere conducive to CSP’s mission and goals
  • Must reside on campus for the duration of employment
  • Other duties as assigned
Skills and Abilities:
  • Posses outstanding leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate creativity
  • Ability to adapt to difficulties that may arise—conflict and time management skills
  • Knowledge of campus resources and general campus geographic layout
  • Ability to work as a team player
  • Demonstrate an ability to work with a diverse population of high school youth
  • Highly motivated and proactive
  • Active listener and participant

South Campus
Check-in: June 23, 2011 at 12pm
Check-out: June 26, 2011 at 10am
