Description:
Environment, Culture, and Conservation (ECCo) seeks an ethnographer to work on an asset-mapping project that involves rapid fieldwork in the city of Chicago. ECCo is conducting rapid inventories of various Chicago neighborhoods to recommend steps for the Chicago Department of Environment to engage communities in successful implementation of the Chicago Climate Action Plan (CCAP). The ethnographer will work as part of a team to help identify community concerns and eco-friendly values and practices that the City and the Austin community can draw on to become more sustainable and climate-friendly. The project will be conducted in partnership with community based organizations and deploy elements of participatory action research. Primary responsibilities will be to conduct rapid participatory fieldwork; analyze and compile findings; and assist in the preparation of short reports.
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Anthropology, Sociology, or related social science field
- Experience conducting ethnographic research
- Ability to work under tight deadlines
- Experience working in Chicago neighborhoods
- Interest in applied anthropology: conducting rapid research and quickly translating it into recommendations and action plans
- Fluency in another language commonly spoken in Chicago (e.g., Spanish, Arabic, Cantonese, Mandarin, Polish, etc.) helpful but not required
